LIFE Wellness Stand up for your heart!

Stand up for your heart!

February is Heart Health Month. Did you know that 800,000 people in the United States have a heart attack each year? One of the biggest risk factors is physical inactivity.

Prolonged sitting increases your chance of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. According to Harvard Medical School, sitting too long relaxes your largest muscles, preventing them from taking sugar from the blood stream. Sitting for too long also tightens muscles and stiffens joints, making it harder to walk.

A study published in the European Heart Journal found that replacing sitting with standing or light activity can improve health. Moderate to vigorous activity can be even more beneficial!

Move more with these tips:

  • Walk around while taking calls.Use a standing desk or sit on a stability ball.
  • Use a timer or set your phone or fitness tracker to remind you to move.
  • Do a few squats before sitting in your chair.
  • Drink water from a small cup at your desk, so you need to refill it more often.
  • Place items far away so you must get up more often.
  • Do small exercises while waiting for your food or coffee.
